St. Joseph’s Outreach Services is an incorporated association originally formed by parishioners of South Yarra. Today SJOS operates 12 transitional housing apartments, a crisis shelter for the homeless, a food bank which services the needs of 1200 local families and a bread relief program which provides 24 hour access to frozen bread. All of these programs operate from converted Parish buildings and are supported through donation and fundraising with the assistance of up to 60 volunteers.
The Barry Library hosts a fine collection of theological and social justice titles which includes books, CDs, DVDs and magazines. Donations welcome. It also encompasses a small computer lab which offers free internet. The library is available to the general public and school groups.
The Tolentine Memorial Garden
Nestled between St Joseph’s Church and the Parish Centre lies a tranquil peaceful space, where all are invited to pause for quiet reflection and remembrance. Parishioners and others may request placement of memorial plaques on the rear wall of the garden and are able to inter the ashes of their deceased loved ones amidst its tranquil setting.
Formerly St. Joseph’s convent, the Haven is a facility providing 14 independent living units for those living with a mental illness. This was made possible through a partnership between the Parish of South Yarra and the Haven Foundation. This building, still owned by the Parish was provided to the Foundation on a 40 year peppercorn lease and now provides safe, supported accommodation. It has proved to be a very successful project and has provided the model for the Haven Foundation to work towards other similar projects.
